SCMS Instrumental Music Ensembles
6th Grade Band
6th Grade Band is designed to introduce students to instrumental music performance. Students will learn to perform individually as well as in a full band setting. In doing so they can develop a sense of responsibility, dedication teamwork and positive self esteem.
Students will be instructed on basic tone production, rhythm, and simple melodies using the Essential Elements 2000 method book. In order to increase student’s success, they are taught and encouraged to develop good practice habits as well as establishing a regular practice routine.
Although performance is not the main objective or focus at the 6th Grade level, the 6th Grade Band will perform 2 times during the school year.
7th and 8th Grade Bands
7th and 8th Grade Bands both meet in a full band setting daily. In both groups, students continue to fine tune their knowledge of their instrument as well as instrumental music as a whole. These groups will give 6-7 performances throughout the school year.
Both bands participate in District Band festival where they are compared with other middle school bands in the State of Michigan. Both groups will also participate in local parades on a yearly basis.
The goal for all 8th graders is to be prepared to make a smooth transition into the high school band program.
Transfer Students
Transfer students from other school districts may request advanced placement for their students with 1 or more year(s) of previous successful playing experience. Whenever possible, accommodations will be made to ensure that the child is in the most appropriate group for their ability level whether it be up grade levels or down.
Middle School Jazz Band
Middle School Jazz Band starts in mid-October and meets after school one day per week and is open to all 7th and 8th middle school Band students. This group performs 2 times annually.
Solo and Ensemble
Solo and Ensemble festival is an added opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to excel musically. Students will prepare music such as solos, duets to perform at our district solo and ensemble festival. They will be judged and compared to other instrumental music students throughout the state.
Private Lessons
Private Lessons are available for students both during the school day as well as after school to offer the most flexibility to fit our student’s schedules.
